In proof-based mathematics, what is the difference between "if" and "iff"?

I've been studying out of calculus textbook and sometimes when they are proving an expression, "iff" is used. I always was under the impression that was a spelling error, but it seems to come up much to often and cannot truly be a spelling error. Any help?
